Tabernas is located at the foot of a hill and dominated by a huge Moorish castle. This is where Fernando and Isabelle hid during the siege of Almería.

The surrounding desert landscape has been used to shoot numerous spaghetti westerns, including ?The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly? with Clint Eastwood. There is a thriving music film industry here, with many town being re-created in the style of the old American west. It's like a mini Hollywood.

There's also a Texas Hollywood where they've built an Indian villlage with wigwams and a Mexican town and US Cavalry frontier fort. It's located in a spectacular setting.

Because of the high levels of sunlight here, they have built an energy plant at Los Retamares that will improve the techniques for the production of of electricity. It uses the steam produced through the heat of the sun's radiation.

The skies in this part of the country are incredibly clear. There is a massive high-powered telescope at Calar Alto in the Sierra de Filabres, which was built to take advantage of the crystalline air and study the infinite clear blue skies.
