There are many localities and municipalities from Adra to Mojacar that we can find along the way, each one different and varied, surrounded by a unique and priveldged natural environment. It has not been destroyed by massification like other destinations in spanish geography, that not long ago thrived in the same natural environment. Adra, Berja, and El Ejido
Adra is a municipality that is situated in the southeast section of the province of Almeria bordering with the province of Granada. Historically it has been a municipality that has lived off agriculture and artisan fishing, although in the last years tourism has been a great source of income. This zone of Almeriense Poniente (winds) is also known as the Campo de Dalias (dalia fields). In Dalias, for example, the monument of the Iglesia de Santa María de Ambrox of the XVI century, and the Barrio de Celín are amongst the most visited.
Adra posesses very important hotel chains, each one placed in priveledged locations, respecting the environment. Of great importance in Adra is the Natural Reserve of Albufera de Adra a destination point of migrating birds, where they make nests and rest during their long journey. After Adra we run into the locality of Berja, a city with history, especially since it was the old watchtower during the roman times. Of berja you'll find water pipes, that come straight down from the mountains of Sierra Nevada with fresh spring water. Something that brings prosperity to this municipality. From Berja we take a jumpo to Ejido, a muncipality that has had a great economic growth due to it's greenhouses. It is incredible to see this area...acres and acres of covered in plastic fields to shield their plants.
If we continue our trip around the coast we'll find localities such as Balerma, and Balanegra, small municipalities that have based their economy in artisan fishing. We must not fail to mention Salinas de Guardias Viejas, today a refuge to sea birds.
We must highlight the beaches in this area such as Guardias Viejas, Balerna, and Balanegra, beaches that flow into the locality of Adra of phoenician origin. |
