Almeria's bronze age sites, Los Millares and El Argar are landmarks in the prehistoric evolution of the Iberian Peninsula.

To this day, you can still see traces of the Tartessos, Phoenicians, Greeks and Carthaginians who all came to Almeria to mine the rich seams of silver.

The Romans were also here. They arrived in around the 3rd century BC and renamed the capital "Portus Magnus". Almeria was under the control of the Romans until the Visigoths arrived in the 7th century.

That said, the most important and influential race who have occupied this territory were (of course) the Arabs, who ruled these lands for nearly eight centuries.
