Berja is the capital of the Alpujarra Baja, it is a rancher city at the Sierra de Gador´s feet on the west of the province of Almeria.

Berja is the capital of Alpujarra Baja. It's a farming town located at the foot of the Sierra de Gador in the west of the Almeria province.

The whole area is surrounded by pretty vineyards and fruit orchards, athough unfortunately, the increase in the use of greenhouses (invernaderos) has affected the natural beauty of the area.

Berja has a very strong Moorish and Roman past. You can still see some fantastic dilapidated old buildings here. Two well worth checking out are the ruined Alcazaba in the suburb of Villavieja and the Moorish baths in the eastern suburb of Alcaudique.
