During the 1960s, numerous movie directors chose Almeria's desert-like landscape to film some of todays classic westerns. The landscape is ideal.

It enabled them to perfectly recreate their own version of America's wild west. Italian film director, Sergio Leone is probably the most well known for shooting here.

Nowadays the mesetas and cactus trees of the Tabernas Natural Area and the run down film sets have been turned into a tourist attraction.

It's like a mini Hollywood; complete with double door saloons and trading posts. The nearby village of Tabernas, with its charming Mudejar church, makes a good base for exploring the desert.
