Almeria is famous for its cave houses (casas cuevas). These curious dwellings are dug out of the soft sand-coloured cliffs. They provide excellent insulation dry desert-like heat.
Normally, they have tiled roofs with a window and a chimney that comes out of the earth behind. Skylights are built to light the interior of the cave.
The most interesting cave dweller settlements are in Barrio de Chanca, Alhabia, Gádor and Benahadux.
If you go to the region around Santa Fe de Mondújar, near the recently excavated site of Los Millares, you'll see the largest Bronze Age settlement in Europe with a prehistoric fortress built 2,000 years before Christ.
