Almeria, the capital city, was first founded by the Phoenicians and later developed by the Romans. It?s most prominent feature is the imposing Moorish fort that dominates the city. There are many fascinating corners of the city to discover along with numerous gastronomic and cultural attractions. Almeria has undergone extensive renovation and development over the past few years. Nowadays, it has excellent communications with the rest of Andalucia and has very easy access to the airport.
Just north of the city, you'll find a place called Rioja. It?s close to the valley of the River Andarax and surrounded by some spectacular orange groves - well worth a visit!
Go further north and you'll come to the desert of Tabernas, between the mountains of los Filabres and Alhamilla. It occupies 11,625 hectares of stunning natural park.
Almeria is the perfect place to enjoy water sports such as sailing, scuba diving, windsurfing and rowing. It was the chosen location for the 2005 Mediterranean Games
and a sporting spirit still very much prevails throughout the city.
Almeria itself is modern, pleasant and has become an attractive and relaxing holiday destination. It also has a wealth of history to offer. |
